The whole of the Sixth Form visited Sunderland University for the afternoon. This is the first event as part of the school’s exciting new partnership with our local university. During the afternoon, students had the opportunity to take part in one taster lecture from a range of subjects including Nursing, Media, Criminology, Psychology and many more.
Students on the paramedic taster lesson enjoyed an ambulance tour, a full tour of the paramedic training facilities and even tried out CPR. The students also took part in a campus tour led by the university student ambassadors to look at the range of facilities that are available, including the state-of-the-art medical facilities.
Students on the Media & Film tater lesson were welcomed into Spark radios own recording studio to mix their own playlists, host their own mini-radio show and work with the broadcasting equipment to mix different elements together seamlessly! Granger Smith became the radio host of the day, creating a new slogan for the station to go alongside his own jingle!
The group then spent some time in the newly refurbished RTGS studio (real-time green screen) and were given the opportunity to see how sets are created on programs ranging from Match of the Day to Downton Abbey! We even saw Whinnie the Pooh present the news!
All students then got a tour of either City Campus or the St Peter’s campus; picking up coffees and cakes from the campus coffee shops of the way. Back at the City campus the day ended with a whole group lecture in the library building where Sunderland University staff rounded things off with an insight into the courses offered at Sunderland as well as why, and how, they might want to study there.
We are looking forward to many more events taking place at the university, including our upcoming Careers Fair which will be held in the CitySpace Sports Hall on Thursday 24th November.
