Year 13 Chemists have been focussing on the required practical’s they will be assessed in their A Level examinations. This practical involves testing for cations (positive ions) such as the group 2 metal ions Mg2+,Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ or anions (negative ions) such as the halides Cl–, Br– and I–. Each test will give a unique observation to allow the students to identify the correct ion.
Students will s focussing on synthesising and purifying ethyl ethanoate from ethanol and ethanoic acid. Ethyl ethanoate is an ester which smells like pear drops.
