The Year 13 historians attended a trip Newcastle University’s Philip Robinson Library to conduct vital research for their NEA (coursework) on the American civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. famously visited the university to receive an honorary degree and a statue of him is present on campus.

The budding historians took advantage of the library’s million strong book collection and tens of thousands of digital resources to support the argument they are making on a question of their choice. Jackie, the wonderful librarian who assisted us, described the students as independent and motivated. They were given a special library card which allows them to visit the library whenever they choose and they can even handle real historical artefacts such as letters Martin Luther King jr. actually wrote!
